La speranza e l’indeterminatezza: realtà, scrittura etnografica e il desiderio di buon fine
Malgrado le persone cerchino soluzioni definitive e agiscano come se fossero ottenibili, la vita sociale reale risiede in una serie di eventi e incontri imprevedibili. Mentre la burocrazia e altre strutture formali cercano di abolire l’indeterminatezza, le pratiche – dai giochi d’azzardo fino agli accordi “sotto banco” – spesso smentiscono tali speranze, aprendo invece a nuovi orizzonti di speranza e di ambizione. In questo intervento presenterò una serie di scenari etnografici in cui l’inaspettato salva diversi attori sociali, tra cui anche gli antropologi, dalla delusione dei desideri bloccati.
Hope and indeterminacy: Reality, ethnographic writing, and the desire for good endings
Although people seek definitive solutions and act as those these were attainable, real social life consists in a series of unpredictable events and encounters. While bureaucracy and other formal structures seek to abolish indeterminacy, actual practices – from games of chance to underhand deals – frequently belie such hopes, instead opening up new horizons of hope and ambition. In this address, the speaker will present a series of ethnographic vignettes in which the unexpected saves social actors, including anthropologists, from the disappointment resulting from frustrated desires.

Michael Herzfeld è Ernest E. Monrad Professor of the Social Sciences Emeritus alla Harvard University e Professor of Critical Heritage Studies Emeritus all’Università di Leiden. Autore di 14 libri e creatore di due film etnografici, ha svolto ricerche etnografiche in Grecia, Italia e Tailandia. Tra i suoi interessi spiccano la politica della casa e degli sfratti, la scrittura antropologica, i mestieri e l’apprendistato, la burocrazia e la politica del patrimonio e del nazionalismo. Dottore honoris causa all’Università Libera di Bruxelles e alle Università della Macedonia (Salonicco), Creta e St Andrews (Scozia), è anche cittadino onorario della Grecia.
Michael Herzfeld is Ernest E. Monrad Professor of the Social Sciences Emeritus at Harvard University and Professor of Critical Heritage Studies Emeritus at Leiden University. Author of 14 books and producer of due ethnographic films, has conducted ethnographic research in Greece, Italy, and Thailand. Among his interested are, especially, the politics of housing and eviction, anthropological writing, crafts and apprenticeship, bureaucracy and the politics of heritage and nationalism. He holds honorary doctorates from the Université Libre de Bruxelle and from the Universities of Macedonia (Thessaloniki), Crete, and St Andrews (Scotland). He is also an honorary citizen of Greece.
